The Institute on Religion and Democracy hosted the Rev. Thomas Hinson of Church of the Advent in Washington, D.C. on April 22 for our “Wednesday Worship” noonday prayer and luncheon. His sermon was on the Road to Emmaus in Luke 24:13-35.
The monthly gathering aims to foster Christian fellowship within the greater Washington area. IRD hosts prominent Christian leaders to deliver sermons, pray, and facilitate worship.
In late 2007, Hinson joined with a group of men and women living in Columbia Heights, and together they established Church of the Advent (Anglican). Prior to this time, Hinson lived in Boston, where his passion for urban renewal was born out of his tenure as a mental health counselor working with underserved populations. A native of North Carolina, Thomas attended Furman University in Greenville, SC, where he met his wife, Laura. He received an M.Div. and an M.A. in counseling from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, MA. He and Laura have two sons, Riley and Maddox, and a daughter, Emmeline.
