Biblical Sexuality

Christian Reformed Church Stands Strong for Biblical Sexuality

Aaron Vriesman on August 10, 2022

The Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRC) held its denomination-wide synod meeting in June and the result was a strong stand for biblical marriage and sexuality.

Much was building up to this meeting. The long-awaited Human Sexuality Report (HSR) was on the agenda. This 175-page report presented the historical church’s position on sexuality and called for synod to officially recognize that position to already have “confessional status.” In other words, all pastors, elders and deacons would be expected to uphold and abide by the historical stance on sexuality.

Reinforcing the need for this clarity was the Neland Avenue CRC in Grand Rapids, Michigan that in 2020 ordained a deacon living in a same-sex marriage

Less prominent was an overture asking for synod to declare heretical any denials of penal substitutionary atonement. This was in response to a minister who was ordained despite his objections to the atonement language most prominent in the CRC confessions.

Synod 2022 might go down as the most monumental meeting for the CRC of this generation.

During debate on the synod floor, one delegate said the CRC theology of sexuality “has caused there to be blood on our hands.” The chair ruled this comment out of order. The delegate was told he needed to apologize or lose speaking privileges. He refused to apologize and lost his right to speak

As delegates were deliberating the report on sexuality, around 200 protesters filled the parking lot waving rainbow flags and singing hymns. The next day a smaller crowd gathered wearing black clothing. Spelling out “lament” on cardboard, they wore masks and remained silent.

The results were landslide decisions in favor of the historic church view of sexuality. Synod voted 131-45 to recommend the Human Sexuality Report to the churches. Synod then voted 123-53 to affirm that the traditional stance on sexuality is “confessional” and therefore binding on all officebearers. An instruction to Neland Avenue to “immediately rescind its decision to ordain a deacon in a same-sex marriage” passed 134 to 44. The same number of votes approved the formation of an in loco committee for Neland Avenue to “oversee its compliance” to synod rulings. The in loco committee was also tasked to “admonish” Classis Grand Rapids East (the regional body of congregations where Neland Avenue is a member) for their failure to hold Neland Avenue accountable to CRC positions.

During the debates on sexuality and Neland Avenue, delegates who spoke in favor of the HSR and biblical marriage were noticeably younger, from the generations rising at a time when Christian faith increasingly means standing out from the greater society. Orthodox voices were also more diverse. The CRC’s Korean Council and the Hispanic Consejo Latino both released statements ahead of synod strongly supporting the orthodox Human Sexuality Report.

On atonement, synod passed statements by overwhelming voice votes saying “to in any way deny that Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection provide a substitutionary work of bearing God’s wrath on our behalf because of the just punishment we deserve for our sin” is a “serious deviation from the teachings of the confessions” of the CRC. Any ordained leader making such denials “is worthy of special discipline.” Moreover, “it is our duty to uphold the clear teaching of the Scriptures and confessions on the nature of Christ’s substitutionary work.”

Backlash to synod decisions was immediate. Disgruntled opinion pieces poured out from CRC ministers and a former Calvin University Provost, among others. Synod 2022 was a coup, a bunch of fundamentalists seeking rules in loveless orthodoxy and weaponizing CRC doctrinal standards with no middle ground or listening

Local news coverage of synod only interviewed Calvin University professors and protesters unhappy about the results. Religion News Service ran an article only interviewing those who were disappointed. The week after synod wrapped, Religion News Service reported on the “thriving” Neland Avenue congregation “being singled out” for its inclusive practices.

Eleven days after synod adjourned, Neland Avenue held a council meeting. They decided to not comply with synod’s instruction. The council took synod’s admonition “very seriously,” they said in a statement. However, “our conscience told us that we would be both disobedient to God’s call, and less than fully loving to all His children” in following synod’s decision. Instead, the Neland council “decided to appeal.” This is puzzling because synod is the CRC’s highest authority and its decisions are considered “settled and binding” unless new grounds are presented.

Not only will Neland reject synod’s decision, they will not leave the CRC either. Neland council chair Larry Louters was a delegate to Synod 2022 and was granted the floor after the recommendations about his congregation were overwhelmingly approved.

We’re not going anywhere,” said Louters.

Appointing members to the in loco committee to oversee Neland’s compliance is on the shoulders of newly appointed general secretary Zachary King. No word yet on when the committee will be finalized, but they will have their work cut out for them. Refusing to follow synod’s instructions and refusing to leave the denomination creates an unprecedented situation for the CRC. In the past, rogue congregations have departed voluntarily or received discipline on the regional level by the classis.

While the Abide Project, a CRC renewal movement organized one year ago, is named as a culprit for persuading synod to maintain antiquated sexuality standards, this is most definitely not the case. As clerk of the Abide Project steering committee, this writer is fully acquainted with Abide’s efforts to promote biblical sexuality. As a delegate and first clerk of Synod 2022, I saw firsthand how synod deliberated and voted. As much as it would be desirable to claim credit, there is absolutely no way Abide had the influence at synod to produce such overwhelmingly orthodox vote margins.

Some might find solace in thinking a conservative lobby group thwarted the otherwise-inevitable progress. The real story here is that the Abide Project organized weekly virtual prayer times for the 8 months leading up to synod. CRC pastors and members across North America have been asking God to preserve the CRC’s biblical faithfulness. The landslide outcomes are simply an answer to many prayers.

With one Christian denomination after another blowing with the winds of the world, the CRC drawing a firm line in the sand is nothing short of miraculous. Even the CRC’s closest sister denomination – the Reformed Church in America (RCA) – is going with the denominational crowd. The same week of CRC synod, the RCA General Synod made an affirming apology to “LGBTQ persons, whom we embrace as children of God who are welcome in the RCA.” Additionally, Professor James Brownson who wrote the book on biblical allowance for same-sex marriage was granted emeritus status with a standing ovation.

Going against the headwinds of culture and against the crowd of other denominations, only God himself can be credited for preserving biblical standards in the CRC. Only God himself can maintain orthodoxy in the CRC going forward.

Declining memberships is a popular topic in these pages.

“The Christian Reformed Church (CRC) is shrinking. Far from a new trend, the denomination has been steadily declining since its peak in 1992. Since claiming over 316,000 members in 1992, the CRC has lost members every year since with only two exceptions. As of 2018, the denomination reports just under 228,000 members, marking a 25 percent decline in 26 years.”

This report is not as described. While hewing, just barely, to traditional views of sexuality and marriage, this is a deeply feminist, progressive and woke document that adopts secular language and views on gender and sexual orientation, predictable since the denomination began ordaining women and left NAPARC.

The report commends recruiting “celibate” homosexuals for ministry and bringing them into households with children as additional parent figures, which is simply reckless. It equates the sins of sodomy with premarital sex or viewing pornography. It calls male pornography users to repentance but female pornography producers are to be objects or compassion only who must not be shamed in any way (male pornography participants are curiously excluded and ignored from this consideration).

All told, the report does a decent job of describing the deplorable realities of our culture in a way that more conservative churches often fail to do, but it advocates a reckless and unscriptural way forward that seems to only kick the can down the road to the day when CRC fully affirms total acceptance of LGBTQI+ in all of its manifestations.

“Biblical sexuality’ is something of an oxymoron. Other then being between one man and one woman, nothing else is known. all is presumption. And those presumptions are founded upon several more presumptions associated with ‘natural law’. Now someone must have noticed, considering the sexual scandals all traditions are embroiled in, that natural law is subject to very consideral moral corruption. And it makes no sense the ‘presume’ that God would found the most important human relationship, marriage, on such a shakey, uneven foundation. So one might ask, if before the Fall, human nature was in any way different from what is understood today? I almost wonder if being subject to natural law is not the punishment mankind suffers for what ever that first disobedience was. Yet another unknown.
