Methodist Manifesto

New Methodist Manifesto

Mark Tooley on May 24, 2022

In January nearly 60 traditional Methodist scholars met outside Washington, DC to craft an articulation of core Wesleyan doctrine. Their work, called “The Faith Once Delivered,” was released yesterday, with hopes it will theologically enrich the Next Methodism.

Nearly 70 Methodist scholars have so far attached their names, and the number is growing.

The document is over 24,000 words but it merits your time to read here! Today is Aldersgate Day, commemorating when John Wesley’s heart was “strangely warmed,” so it’s especially appropriate to delve into Methodist beliefs!

Two of the signers, Dr Joel Scandrett and Dr Winfield Bevins are ordained ACNA priests!

I like this document, except for 1 item concerning the Salvation section. This Section, leaves out the Salvation Statement by Paul that is necessary for a prospective candidate needs to start with. This declaration comes from 1 Corinthians 15; 1 – 4. Salvation Grace must include believing in the Resurrection as the 1 Corinthians verses include this. Also Romans 10: 9 – 10, states this belief in the Resurrection must be in your heart. Paul also gives us a warning to the effect in 1 Corinthians 15: 17, that if you don’t believe in the Resurrection, you are still in your sins. Please consider this as an addition to your document.

This is an inside baseball exercise. Not designed to enlighten more than a handful, if any, of the laity.

The gyrations of a dying institution. Be merciful and complete its demise ASAP.

Interesting how “Wesleyan tradition” is the justification for some points. Could this substitute of human tradition instead of biblical instruction be the cause of the problems in the UMC and presage the same for the coming “orthodox” GMC?
