Manhattan Declaration: A Call to Christian Conscience

on November 20, 2009

IRD President Mark Tooley is among the signers of the “Manhattan Declaration: A Call to Christian Conscience,” released today in Washington, DC. Appealing to both biblical revelation and the common good of society, the declaration affirms “the sanctity of human life, the dignity of marriage as the conjugal union of husband and wife, and the rights of conscience and religious freedom.”

The declaration concludes with a vow that “we will not comply with any edict that purports to compel our institutions to participate in abortions, embryo-destructive research, assisted suicide and euthanasia, or any other anti-life act; nor will we bend to any rule purporting to force us to bless immoral sexual partnerships, treat them as marriage or the equivalent, or refrain from proclaiming the truth, as we know it, about morality and immorality and marriage and the family.”

The Manhattan Declaration has been endorsed so far by 145 Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and evangelical Protestant leaders, including IRD Board of Directors members Robert George, George Weigel, and Thomas Oden. George was one of the three drafters of the declaration. IRD President Tooley and his predecessor, the Rev. Dr. James Tonkowich, participated in the yearlong process by which the declaration was developed.
