The Institute on Religion and Democracy hosted the Rev. Porter Harlow of Christ Presbyterian Church in Burke, Virginia, on May 6 for our “Wednesday Worship” noonday prayer and luncheon. His sermon was on “Flourishing or Frustration” in Psalm 127.
The monthly gathering aims to foster Christian fellowship within the greater Washington area. IRD hosts prominent Christian leaders to deliver sermons, pray, and facilitate worship.
In addition to graduating from Reformed Theological Seminary, Harlow is a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law. He is an adjunct professor at George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government where he teaches a class on the Law and Ethics of War. He is the author of How Should We Treat Detainees: An Examination of Enhanced Interrogation Techniques under the Light of Scripture and the Just War Tradition (Presbyterian & Reformed, 2016), which World Magazine selected as a runner up for Book of the Year in 2016. He also authored “Remembering Paul Ramsey’s “The Just War” published by Reformed Faith & Practice in 2018. Before going to seminary, Harlow taught at The Army JAG School in Charlottesville, Virginia, and contributed numerous chapters and articles on law of war topics for the The Army Lawyer and the The Operational Law Handbook.
