Responding to Hyper Empowered Individualism

Mark Tooley on July 25, 2024

Here’s my chat with Andrés Spokoiny, CEO of the Jewish Funders Network in New York, about his new book Tradition and Transition: Jewish Communities and the Hyper Empowered Individual.

Christians often complain about autonomous individualism. One recent much discussed example is Carl Trueman’s The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Expressive Individualism, and the Road to Sexual Revolution.

Spokoiny’s review of hyper individualism’s impact on Jewish communities is an important contribution, relevant to Christians and all persons concerned about social cohesion. Importantly, Spokoiny warns against nostalgia or searching for answers in authoritarian alternatives to democracy.

Liberals always want to gather people in groups, then herd them into their fold so they can be robbed of their convictions and their treasures.
Individualism won the American Revolution and built a great country. Collectivism will destroy the churches and the country.
