When some people lash out with violence, we ask “how has our system failed them?”
When other people lash out with violence, we ask “how have they failed our system?”
Noticing this distinction is the beginning of real insight.
Because the Hoffman/Ware analysis is fundamentally incurious about the origins of the behavior it seeks to eradicate, its conclusions are unlikely to be useful. Indeed we learn that their prospective “solutions” amount to tightening civil liberties and redoubling state propaganda efforts. Thinly veiled references to regulation of social media content and “educating” the general public should at this point fool no one. And clearly this is the type of make-work slop our administrative state will gobble up (with the generous support of so-called non-governmental organizations). But it will do nothing to reduce the appeal of “extremism” because it presupposes that extremists’ concerns are prima facie invalid. Resentment against liberalism apparently bubbles up from nothingness and liberals are therefore condemned to an eternal game of whack-a-mole. Raise your hand if you’re still buying that.
