“The seminaries of all the mainline Protestant denominations liberalized early in the 20th century, a little over a hundred years ago. But it was largely not noticed by the lay people because the clergy who went into the pulpit continued to sound orthodox and used orthodox language, but often having different meanings behind what they were saying.” (Time stamp 5:04) – Mark Tooley
I witnessed the results of that liberalization when I pursued a course of study (COS) at Duke Divinity School in early 2022. One of my classes included instructions on how to utilize mantra meditation which has Buddhist and Hindu origins. A required textbook quoted and referenced numerous New Age works by Gerald May and Matthew Fox.
My congregation was also subjected to a previous pastor who was a Duke graduate. He lasted only two weeks in the pulpit before the church leaders complained to the DS and he was appointed to another church.
The liberalization of seminaries and the “products” (clergy) of these schools are painfully recognizable to both orthodox clergy and lay persons.
