Fired for Saying “Blessed”?

on July 8, 2014

Once again, political correctness is attempting to regulate Christians’ public witness in the name of tolerance. This time, however, so-called tolerance means suffocating statements of faith through simple greetings.

In Kentucky, U.S. Bank allegedly fired a Christian bank teller for simply saying “have a blessed day” to her customers upon completion of a business transaction. If true, this dispute reminds us of the important role the Church’s strong witness plays in every-day life.

During a Fox News interview the bank teller, named Polly, explained, “I was told that I was not allowed to tell customers to ‘have a blessed day’ anymore. That there had been several complaints. And I told them that I didn’t agree with that. That I had been saying it for over two years at that point without complaint from anybody – management, anything.” She continued, “Ultimately, I was let go because of it.”

Beyond the disputing, there is an important point to this story that we should all take note. That is, Americans now live in a nation where adhering to traditional Christian teaching can cost job security, friendships, business ventures, and cultural acceptance. But now is not the time to hide our faithful witness to the Gospel.

The words of Robert P. George, McCormick professor of jurisprudence at Princeton University and chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, come to mind: “Most assuredly Christians — Catholics and Protestants alike— will face persecution from the elites of secular society for our faith. Ignore the intimidation tactics.”

That situation is truly a shameful action to take upon a caring employee who clearly has a true heart.
I don’t fear this will escalate into further episodes, at least not as long as there are sensible people in charge. But then, that’s probably assuming too much?

Back in the 1980s, the US Postal Service was encouraging postmasters to say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas.” Our local postmaster attended my church, and we were totally behind when he told us he would stop saying “Merry Christmas” when they dragged him off to jail.

    Liberals are totalitarians by nature.

Please tell me what church you go to and where. I would very much like to avoid ever attending a church that teaches that “Liberals are totalitarians by nature..” I would not like to attend a church that condemns the teachings of Jesus.

You are confusing apples and oranges, my friend.

    Illogical response.

What’s more disheartening is there were complaints. That means at least two people’s response to a kind remark is to not only get offended but to be so angry as to complain about it. That’s some really miserable people.

The Russian word for Thank You means God save you or God Bless you. This word existed when the country was officially atheist.

If this story is TRUE, those who have accounts in the bank should vote with their feet as they did recently at Costco re. the book America.

I suspect there’s more to the story, though.

I imagine no one was offended except for the cowards in management.
