Religious Left Does Final Push for Obamacare!

Will Obamacare’s effort to assert government control over the U.S. health care system slip through the U.S. Congress in the coming days?  The religious left, which has virtually sacramentalized its dream of socialized medicine over the decades, is worried. A coalition of liberal church officials, including United Methodists, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, and evangelical left activists, are imploring Congress to approve Obamacare legislation speedily. Here’s my article.

Meanwhile, Washington, D.C. has legalized same-sex “marriage” while refusing to allow its citizens to vote on the issue.  Naturally, liberal mainline and Unitarian church officials in D.C. have backed the redefinition of marriage. The city’s more spiritually robust black churches remain overwhelmingly opposed but are ignored by the city council. The Catholic Church may have to reduce some of its important ministries in the city to avoid having to comply with what the church knows to be intrinsically wrong. Here’s our press release.  Thank God for D.C.’s Catholics and black church leaders who continue courageously to defend traditional marriage and who are still trying to get a referendum in D.C. so that the people can have a voice.

IRD’s Jeff Walton attended and reported on the Episcopal Church’s ultra-liberal Urban Caucus gathering in Chicago recently. The activists rallied for Great Society-style, Big Government programs.  Read Jeff’s articles here and here. He also reported on the caucus’s distress over The Episcopal Church’s headquarters hiring non-union staff.

Meanwhile, a committee of the Presbyterian Church (USA) is preparing to fire a new salvo against Israel without similar human rights concerns about Palestinian rulers or other Middle East autocracies.  Alan Wisdom sounded the alarm about this in The Weekly Standard.  And here is some additional reporting on this from Alan.   Alan also reported about his denomination’s growing financial troubles.

Finally, here’s the latest from Faith McDonnell about persecution of Chinese Christians. What if all the liberal church activists in America were to redirect their considerable energies and resources to helping fellow Christians who suffer for their faith? Would that not be a powerful development for the Body of Christ?  Please pray, pray, pray for suffering Chinese Christians, and also for often spiritually blind Americans Christians.
