Reflections on the Coronation of King Charles III

Collin Bastian on May 12, 2023

On May 3, The Institute on Religion and Democracy, through the John Wesley Institute and its director, Dr. Ryan Danker, hosted Father Philip Corbett SSC, a priest of the Society of the Holy Cross in the Church of England and the vicar of All Saints Notting Hill in London, to discuss the theological significance of the coronation of King Charles III on May 6.

In his discussion with Danker, Father Corbett discussed various facets of the coronation ceremony, including the importance of recognizing the kingship as a particular vocation called by God as expressed through the act of anointing, the symbolism associated with the various garments donned by the king, the differences between this coronation ceremony and previous ceremonies, and why American audiences should care.

You can view the discussion in its entirety below.
