Mainline Protestant rebound?

Rebounding Liberal Protestantism?

Mark Tooley on August 4, 2021

A much publicized Public Religion Research Institute poll claims liberal Protestantism is rebounding at expense of Evangelicalism. I respond to this claim in a podcast with Shane Morris at the Colson Center.

I would not get so excited over a single survey. As has been documented, people overrate their piety and charity in polls. It might be more instructive to look at other advanced countries to see what to expect here. The US tends to be socially behind them.

In regards to the concluding remarks about governance, it seems that if trends hold, the current and up and coming generations of Mainline Protestants are moving more towards the remarks made concerning Evangelicals. When a denomination’s policy positions read like the talking points of one major political party over the other, then it seems that one ia less and less concerned about compromise. It’s also time to call it Ichabod.

Let’s be direct. The direct attack on Scripture and those who believe it is Satanic in origin. The fight is spiritual not temporal. Satan’s goal is to kill and destroy the works, people, and Church of God. Liberalism and Progressivism are his tools. So it’s no wonder that those churches that choose liberalism and turn away from Scripture, ultimately decline. Satan wins! One only has to look at what has happened to the liberal remnants of the Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches. Their membership continues to plummet.
Conservative, orthodox, Bible-believing Christians must put on the whole armor of God, and stand firm. The world still needs salt and light – desperately.

One note especially regarding Methodists. The discovery of the Nag Hammadi library and the Gnostic Gospels gave liberal Christians grounds to challenge and disregard the Biblical Gospels as the word of God. It gave them justification to redefine Christian belief into something more secular. This has driven the political creation of the Progressive Methodist Church.
