Oklahoma Baptist’s Matthew Arbo on Political Theology

on May 20, 2020

There’s lots of ferment today within Evangelicalism over political engagement in America. But there’s also a renaissance within Evangelical academia in serious thinking about political theology, or how Christians should approach politics in sync with historic church teaching.

Within that renaissance is Matthew Arbo, the Jewell and Joe L. Huitt Assistant Professor of Theological Studies and Director of the Center for Faith and Public Life at Oklahoma Baptist University in Oklahoma City.

Arbo represents a new wave of young scholars in Evangelical schools, especially Southern Baptist, focused on political theology. This new wave is encouraging and much needed. Evangelicals typically have not been strong in this area. And Mainline Protestantism, amid its spiritual and institutional implosion, is receding as a factor.

Like many of the best young thinkers in political theology today, Arbo studied under Oliver O’Donovan, the renowned Anglican cleric and former Oxford professor who’s considered the world’s foremost political theologian.

I hope you enjoy my conversation with Arbo.
