Talking about China with Bob Fu

on May 7, 2020

On Wednesday, May 6, I talked to The Rev. Dr. Bob Fu,  the Founder and President of the China Aid Association, about the topic that is on most people’s minds these days: China. China Aid, based in Midland, Texas, works to promote religious freedom and the rule of law in China.

Bob and I have worked together in the Christian Persecution trenches for many years. He’s now an American citizen, but was born in China, and was a Beijing House Church leader  before being arrested and imprisoned by the Communist Government.

Today we talked about what is happening to the Church in China. Lots of bad news. The crackdown on Christians and other believers today is worse than it has ever been since the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976! We also discuss the foolhardy scheme of the Thrift Savings Plan to invest our American military and government personnel’s retirement funds in Chinese industries — including those building advanced weapon systems! (See my previous articles about this critical situation.) And we talk about the impact of COVID-19 (aka the CCP virus) in China.

Bob has provided us with some current videos of crackdowns on Chinese Christians that will be posted separately in the next day or so. I am delighted to share the exciting news that Dr. Fu is now our adjunct Senior Fellow at the Institute on Religion and Democracy! We’ll be working together even more closely to advocate for religious freedom in China and  urge a wise and vigilant response by the US government to threats from the CCP. We hope you will join us in that endeavor!

Dr. Bob Fu biographical information:

Bob was a former student leader during the Tienanmen Square democracy movement in 1989, witnessing the brutal crushing of the movement by the Chinese Communist Party.

In 1993, he graduated with a law degree on international relations from Renmin University of China in Beijing. He was a faculty member at the Beijing Party School of the CCP from 1993-1996.  He was also a house church leader in Beijing until he and his wife, Bochun “Heidi” Cai, were imprisoned in 1996.

In 1997 Bob and Heidi were exiled to the US, a fascinating story recounted in his autobiography, God’s Double Agent (Baker Publishing Group, 2013). In 2002, Dr. Fu founded ChinaAid in Philadelphia to promote religious freedom and rule of law in China. He graduated with a Ph.D. from St. John’s College at the University of Durham in the United Kingdom in the field of religious freedom.

Bob regularly testifies and briefs foreign policymakers and legislators on religious freedom and national security, foreign policy and rule of law as well refugee issues in the free world. In 2019 he hosted the first ever Taiwan International Religious Freedom Forum (www.TIRFF.org) in Taiwan along with Heritage Foundation and two Taiwan hosts.

Dr. Fu is a recipient of William Wilberforce Award by the Colson Center (2020). He is a member of Task Force on National Security and Foreign Policy as well as Policy on Asian Affair of the Heritage Foundation. Bob is also a life member of Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) and Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Law and Religion Monitor journal.
