Bruce Ashford

Southern Baptist Political Theology?

on May 4, 2020

Here’s my video interview with Bruce Ashford, dean at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in North Carolina, discussing public theology and political theology among today’s Evangelicals.

There’s increasing disconnect between today’s Christian political witness in America and the great denominational traditions that can teach us so much. Fortunately, Ashford is optimistic about the growing work and conversation on political and public theology among young Christian academics, especially Southern Baptists.

As author and commentator, and as an academic leader at one of America’s largest seminaries, Ashford is himself a rising voice among Evangelicals on issues intersecting faith and politics. His books include The Gospel of Our King (Baker, 2019), Letters to an American Christian (B&H, 2018), One Nation Under God: A Christian Hope for American Politics (B&H, 2015), and Every Square Inch: An Introduction to Cultural Engagement for Christians (Lexham, 2015). His columns have appeared at Fox News OpinionFirst Things MagazineUSA TodayThe Daily SignalThe Daily Caller, and The Gospel Coalition, among others.

Ashford during this interview was in a hotel room with his children, giving his wife a much needed respite during these times of pandemic, hence the bananas and coffee in the background.

Enjoy!
