Besides a righteous skewer into how the U.S. government functions, this video should also serve as a warning to Christians trying to offer a “prophetic” witness in the public square. Old mainline lobbying organizations especially tend to believe that an increase in funding to certain policies and state institutions will help solve many social problems. They seem to forget that there are perverse incentives to waste resources on twaddle and ridiculous research efforts. Oldline social gospel proponents play right into the bureaucrat’s arms.
If we’re talking about Old Testament prophets, we aren’t just dealing with political injustices and cultural wickedness. We’re also talking about right pious worship and a the transformation of theĀ led (or “heart,” the seat of affections, emotions, and aspirations). The heart’s wickedness metastasizes into great social evils, and the prophet in the Old Testament had to correct both. Asking the budget committee to dole out more cash for a pet bureau (such as education or the EPA) rings hollow when looking at this historic model of preaching.
