Update on the ‘Church and Society’ Court Case

Here is a very informative article about the ongoing Methodist Building litigation, for which the judge’s ruling is currently pending. The trial was in October 2008. You will recall that the United Methodist Board of Church and Society, the building’s owner, has largely ignored a 1965 trust document stipulating that income from the building and other assets originating with the Old Methodist Board of Temperance should be exclusively devoted to programs relating to alcohol concerns. Instead, the Board of Church and Society has spent the money on its political lobbying on Capitol Hill. Finally realizing its legal vulnerability, the Board went to a D.C. court, where the D.C. Attorney General and several interveners have urged that the Board comply with the straightforward meaning of the 1965 trust document.
