Beginning with his first election as Bishop of South Carolina in 2006, the Rt. Rev. Mark Lawrence has had a complicated episcopacy. Twice elected and eventually consecrated in 2008, Lawrence was then twice put on trial and eventually deposed by the Episcopal Church, which his diocese then disassociated from in late 2012.
Quoting author Eugene Peterson, Lawrence tells me that he has sought “a long obedience in the same direction” throughout his ministry.
As he prepares for his concluding period leading the Anglican Church in North America’s largest diocese, Lawrence shares about what he and South Carolina churches learned amidst a season of long legal dispute (2013-2020) and waiting. Five years on from the shooting of nine people at Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston, Lawrence speaks to ministry in a part of the country with a complicated racial history.
Lawrence’s proclamation of the Gospel has spread far beyond the South Carolina Lowcountry, helping to shape the Anglican Church and the vibrant Global South movement within the worldwide Anglican Communion. I hope that you enjoy our conversation!
