African United Methodists Won’t Trade Bible for Dollars

on February 23, 2019

(Here are remarks of Dr. Jerry P. Kulah, Dean of Gbarnga School of Theology, United Methodist University in Liberia, to the Reform and Renewal Coalition Breakfast at the United Methodist Church Special General Conference Session in St. Louis, Missouri, Saturday, 23 February 2019.)

Brothers and sister of The United Methodist Church from all around the world, I humbly greet you in the strong name of Jesus Christ!

We thank God for all who have participated in observing a sacred season of fasting and prayer as we have prepared for this special General Conference session. And we praise God there are thousands upon thousands still on bended knees interceding on our behalf as we make a defining decision regarding the future of The United Methodist Church.

I thank God for His precious Word to us, and I thank him for you, my dear sisters and brothers in Christ.

As the General Coordinator of UMC Africa Initiative I greet you on behalf of all its members and leaders. We want to thank the  Renewal and Reform Coalition within the United Methodist Church for the invitation to address you at this important breakfast meeting.

As I understand it, the plans before us seek to find a lasting solution to the long debate over our church’s sexual ethics, its teachings on marriage, and it ordination standards.

This debate and the numerous acts of defiance have brought the United Methodist Church to a crossroads (Jeremiah 6:16).

One plans invites the people called United Methodists to take a road in opposition to the Bible and two thousand years of Christian teachings. Going down that road would divide the church. Those advocating for the One Church Plan would have us take that road.

Another road invites us to reaffirm Christian teachings rooted in Scripture and the church’s rich traditions.

It says, “All persons are individuals of sacred worth, created in the image of God,” that “All persons need the ministry of the Church,” and that “We affirm that God’s grace is available to all.

It grounds our sexual ethics in Scripture when it says, the UM Church does “not condone the practice of homosexuality and considers [it] incompatible with Christian teaching.”

While “we commit ourselves to be in ministry for and with all persons,” we do not celebrate same-sex marriages or ordain for ministry people who self-avow as practicing homosexuals. These practices do not conform to the authentic teaching of the Holy Scriptures, our primary authority for faith and Christian living.

However, we extend grace to all people because we all know we are sinners in need of God’s redeeming. We know how critical and life changing God’s grace has been in our own lives.

We warmly welcome all people to our churches; we long to be in fellowship with them, to pray with them, to weep with them, and to experience the joy of transformation with them.

Friends, please hear me, we Africans are not afraid of our sisters and brothers who identify as lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgendered, questioning, or queer. We love them and we hope the best for them. But we know of no compelling arguments for forsaking our church’s understanding of Scripture and the teachings of the church universal.

And then please hear me when I say as graciously as I can: we Africans are not children in need of western enlightenment when it comes to the church’s sexual ethics. We do not need to hear a progressive U.S. bishop lecture us about our need to “grow up.”

Let me assure you, we Africans, whether we have liked it or not, have had to engage in this debate for many years now. We stand with the global church, not a culturally liberal, church elite, in the U.S.

We stand with our Filipino friends! We stand with our sisters and brothers in Europe and Russia! And yes, we stand with our allies in America.

We stand with farmers in Zambia, tech workers in Nairobi, Sunday School teachers in Nigeria, biblical scholars in Liberia, pastors in the Congo, United Methodist Women in Cote d’Ivoire, and thousands of other United Methodists all across Africa who have heard no compelling reasons for changing our sexual ethics, our teachings on marriage, and our ordination standards!

We are grounded in God’s word and the gracious and clear teachings of our church. On that we will not yield! We will not take a road that leads us from the truth! We will take the road that leads to the making of disciples of Jesus Christ for transformation of the world!

I hope and pray, for your sake, that you will walk down that road with us. We would warmly welcome you as our traveling companions, but if you choose another road, we Africans cannot go with you.

The vast majority of we Africans support the Modified Traditional Plan for two very important reasons.

First, we believe it is clearly rooted in Scripture and the teachings of Christians in all times and in all places. It reaffirms our church’s belief that “marriage is defined as a sacred relationship between one man and one woman,” not between any two consenting adults.

Second, passage of the Modified Traditional Plan will keep far more United Methodists united as one church than any of the other plans.

I want to be united with my sisters and brothers in our global connection. I hope you want that as well. Let us all walk together in a church steeped in Scripture and the life transforming teachings of our church.

Finally, I trust you will support a gracious exit petition.

Some Africans have been told that if a gracious exit petition is passed our evangelical friends in the U.S. will go their own way and no longer support efforts in Africa. That is not true.

Many of us in Africa have developed deep and long lasting friendships with our brothers and sisters in the U.S. Those relationships will not be severed if a gracious exit petition passes.

Unfortunately, some United Methodists in the U.S. have the very faulty assumption that all Africans are concerned about is U.S. financial support. Well, I am sure, being sinners like all of you, some Africans are fixated on money.

But with all due respect, a fixation on money seems more of an American problem than an African one. We get by on far less than most Americans do; we know how to do it. I’m not so sure you do. So if anyone is so naïve or condescending as to think we would sell our birth right in Jesus Christ for American dollars, then they simply do not know us.

We are seriously joyful in following Jesus Christ and God’s holy word to us in the Bible. And in truth, we think many people in the U.S. and in parts of Europe could learn a great deal from us. The UM churches, pastors and lay people who partner with us acknowledge as much.

Please understand me when I say the vast majority of African United Methodists will never, ever trade Jesus and the truth of the Bible for money.

We will walk alone if necessary, and yet we are confident the ties of Christian fellowship we have with friends here in U.S. will not be severed even if they too must walk apart from a church that would adopt the One Church Plan.

We believe all local churches should be treated fairly and so we strongly support a gracious exit plan.

Friends, not too long ago my country was ravaged by a terrible civil war. And then we faced the outbreak of the Ebola virus. We are keenly familiar with hardship and sorrow, but Jesus has led us through every trial. So nothing that happens over the next few days will deter us from following Him, and Him alone.

We will persevere in the race before us. We will remain steadfast and faithful. And some day we will wear the victor’s crown of glory with our King Jesus! Come walk with us!

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen!

Yes; I thank God for this man and his stand for God and the principals of the Bible. The UMC is not for sale.

  4. Comment by Ken Bennett on February 24, 2019 at 5:13 pm

I think it ironic that the children of the slaves come to save the children of their masters from themselves. The Africans deserve all possible appreciation for their faithfulness. I have not often been ashamed of being caucasian but, after being their teachers and sacrificing our lives for their salvation, we now have much to learn from the Africans. Perhaps they will send missionaries to us.

    We are already here!
We are pastors in your pulpits, fellow believers in your pews, etc.
Probably you need to pray for the grace to have a little humility and boldness to receive the gifts we bring.
Keep the faith and spread it gently.

Pastor Jerry Kulah’s comments to the Methodist convention was heartwarming and encouraging. His words truly reflected his deep understanding of God’s word and its application to the choice and future path of the Methodist Church throughout the world. John Wesley would have stood and applauded Dr. Kulah’s courage in speaking truth to power.

  9. Comment by Steve Bidgood on March 6, 2019 at 11:06 pm

Dr. Kaluh’s faith and praise in our Lord Jesus and the Word of God are a blessing to all believers. If we truly believe that life on earth is practice for eternity, and that God’s objective is to develop our character and prepare us for that eternal responsibility, we had better open our hearts, our minds and our lives to the eternal truth of our Lord, as so beautifully described by the good Doctor. God Bless you for speaking the truth. God Bless our brothers & sisters around the world.

I think there’s a typo in the line, “We do need to hear a progressive U.S. bishop lecture us about our need to ‘grow up.'” Shouldn’t it read, “We do NOT need to hear”?

Dr. Kulah laid out eloquently from where the true hatred and racism flows in our denomination! May God bless and keep him. May all us Americans learn from him and be blessed. It looks like the North American UMC could use some serious missionary work from our UMC African sisters and brothers.

What a remarkable biblically based reply. The issues addressed are rooted in cultural relativism, not scripture : “no one who puts his hand to the plow and turns to look back… will not inherit the Kingdom of God.”

  31. Comment by Zanese Duncan on February 26, 2019 at 8:33 pm

Thanks, Phil, for the comment. We worshipped together at Grace on Ponce in the 1980’s. Love to see many in that young marrieds group standing firm.

Thanks be to God for Dr. Jerry B. Kulah and his firm stand for Jesus Christ! Thanks to God as well for our African brothers and sisters in Christ! Their powerful faith, despite their hardships and obstacles, is a great witness to the UMC in America.

  33. Comment by Ronnie Powell on February 24, 2019 at 6:03 pm

Amen, Amen, AMEN. Lets hope all United Methodist hear what our brother from Africa has said. I only hope more American methodist have the courage to stand up against the liberal left bishops that have tried to ram this garbage down our throats!

  34. Comment by Sue on February 26, 2019 at 8:02 am

Amen. So plainly stated. How much more validation does the UMC need?

  35. Comment by Billye Pittman on February 23, 2019 at 1:50 pm

I’m very thankful that Dr Kulah is taking a stand for Biblical truths. Our pastors need to listen to what he is saying about what is happening in American churches. They would do well to go to Africa and study under his teaching!

  36. Comment by Sam Rushing on February 23, 2019 at 2:03 pm

He speaks for me, as well as my African brothers and sisters. The Church should not be guided by opinion polls or social fads. It should be guided by the Biblical principles it has followed for two thousand years. The UMC seems to be ready to destroy itself, by ignoring the will of the overwhelming majority of its worldwide congregation.

  37. Comment by Andrew Hughes on February 23, 2019 at 2:30 pm

Thank you Dr. Kulah. Great words!

  38. Comment by Terry on February 23, 2019 at 2:30 pm

I remember many years ago, in a youth gathering on the coast, when the progressive bishop mentioned above, according to their own statement, experienced a call to be an evangelist. At that point the bishop would have more than likely stood on the same convictions as the majority of today’s African delegates to the GC. What happened? From my perspective, that bishop unfortunately “grew up.”

  39. Comment by Rosalie on February 27, 2019 at 4:14 pm

Obviously he hasn’t read Chronicles of Narnia. ?

  40. Comment by Kevin Barron on February 23, 2019 at 2:40 pm

I attended Bible college and seminary with students from various African countries. From what I remember, they all seemed more interested in what the Bible taught that what the latest cultural fad was. We need to learn from them. Pray, pray, pray!

  41. Comment by Patty Mac on February 23, 2019 at 3:05 pm

Good words. We all need to remember that our Church is global, and all of our connections need to be heard. We need to be reminded we are called to be in the world, but not of it. #mayGodswillbedone

  43. Comment by Janet McMurray on February 25, 2019 at 9:55 am

Yes, such an inspiring message from a man of God. I pray that the UMC sticks to the Holy Bible and the laws & mores given to us by God! It’s simple: God’s words or the world’s! Praying for the best decision for the majority of the denomination.

I’m so glad to hear that the African church desires to love and welcome the LGBTQ community in their churches. They need to be loved and treated with care because many fear for their lives. However, how will they love them? What resources or actions will be made to care for the LGBTQ commmnity? Will they have outreach programs? Therapeutic opportunities to become opposite sex attracted? The traditional church has an opportunity, but all I hear is the disciplinarian action for leaders. I pray the church will be proactive in their love.

  45. Comment by Donna B Oliphint on February 23, 2019 at 7:15 pm

I imagine they use the same resources they use for every type of sinner–God’s love and the transforming work of the Holy Spirit. Having same sex attraction isn’t the need. Refusing to bow to the sin is the need. We all have besetting sins we are battling through the power of His Holy Spirit. Praise God for our faithful brothers and sisters in Africa! Keeping their eyes on the prize!

  46. Comment by Kate on February 25, 2019 at 4:17 am

Beautifully said. No special treatment or care group needed just the re-assuring transforming power of grace through Christ our Lotd & King that saves ALL sinners alike even myself.

  47. Comment by Lizzie Warren on February 24, 2019 at 7:57 am

The vast majority of churches would never refuse attendance or membership to homosexuals, however, putting homosexuals in leadership positions is another matter. YES, we ALL sin but the difference is we are not asking anyone to say our lying or gossiping, or whatever our myriad fails are, is not a sin.

The old and new testament both say homosexuality is a sin. And that is the crux of the matter. They demand absolution from their sin. To give it is to essentially say, the Bible is wrong on homosexuality. And if it’s wrong on that issue, then there will be someone to demand their particular sin be declassified. It’s not just a slippery slope, it’s an avalanche.

  48. Comment by Hope and Charles Martin on February 24, 2019 at 2:03 pm

Our African brothers and sisters in Christ have taken a stand and spoken with the courage of their convictions, let’s pray that we in the US will do the same. To God be the glory!

Dr. Kulah. You are an answer to my prayers.
The other night I was on a prayer line with other United Methodists- we were praying for the special General Conference. I specifically prayed that a HOLY ROAR would come up out of Africa on the issue before us. May this roar be heard by all of those there In St. Louis and may it resound by the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank you for speaking the truth in love. I appreciate your courage and bold witness. Blessings!

This is a refreshing approach on a hot button topic. Indeed, the African church has heard the call of Christ, had lived into that call, and now is calling the American church back to the basics: love God (over His commands) and love your neighbor (do not condemn NOR condone sin, but speak the truth in love). Thanks Dr. Kulah for sharing your mature faith in the face of immaturity and cultural “relativity.”

  60. Comment by Eva Huber on February 23, 2019 at 5:07 pm

Fearless voice from Africa! You just showed how American Methodists how are fragmented. Indeed, healthier for American Methodists to allow traditionalists to go on their own and so as progressives. And hope eventually you are ready to face the world as self-governing, self-supporting, self-propagating churches and institutions wherever in Africa.

Moderators, a person following your logic has deduced from scripture that some ought to be killed for their orientation. This is where such contempt leads. It would be easy for you to repudiate this here. By doing so, you might also save lives around the world where homosexuals and their families are tortured and killed. Anyone on this thread could call this out. You could stop the killing, but you refuse. Would Jesus have you torture and kill in his name?

  70. Comment by Vern Smith on February 28, 2019 at 1:55 pm

As a Heterosexual sinner(born that way), I was on the road to self-destruction, but Jesus(John 1:,14), came into my life, and gave me a more abundant life! Living in the Bay Area(SF), I was asked if I was concerned about the Homosexual population? Out of self- gratification, I responded, “Hell no, that means the more girls for me”. I regret that I did not know Jesus then, if only I would of shared the Love of Jesus with the Homosexual population, many would have avoided the AIDS(HIV) epidemic!

We sincerely praise and thank God for Dr. Jerry Kulah. A church that no longer stands for the Truth of the Word of God cannot be a light in the world or withstand the onslaught of the powers of darkness in this world.

  73. Comment by E Robert Nagy on February 23, 2019 at 7:37 pm

Many Americans, quite possibly the majority of US U Ted Methodists stand by Scripture, Traditional Christian teaching and understand the need to love all people even when they might struggle to do so. The US Church in general is struggling and that includes the UMC. But the restoration process belongs to the LORD – not cultural, anti-biblical bandaids. (Galatians 1:10)

Should we seek the righteousness that God has stated or demand man’s ways are right.

Jesus said But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
    Matthew 5:6

Of course, we seek righteousness out of the love we have for God and all His people.

I pray that God’s will be done.

Heavenly Father, guide us Your people. Amen.

It is those that have a baby faith that do not know God’s word that needs to Grow up. You have nothing to apologize about and you have my full support and the Springfield, GA USA,s support and I pray you have 100% support of the South Georgia Conference. Thanks for being bold and truth field in your statements. Yes we do not hate the sinner, we hate the sin and as you said we shall stick with the true word of God and those that don’t want to follow God’s unwavering truth needs to meet some where else. I am 100% in favor of everything you said. May God bless you and may He bless the United Methodist Church . Thanks again.

What a truly remarkable message! It takes a good amount of courage and sound belief to be able to present these thoughts. Thank you Dr. Kulah.

Wow! What an outstanding statement on behalf of the African UMC. “Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mould, but let God re-mould your minds from within, so that you may prove in practice that the plan of God for you is good, meets all his demands and moves towards the goal of true maturity..” Romans 12:2 (Phillips’ Translation)

  87. Comment by Charles Brown on February 23, 2019 at 11:55 pm

God tells man God’s Law. Man raising his fist and trying to tell God that he is wrong is so wrong on many levels. We sin, every one of us sins. To have a group demand that their sin be removed from the list of sins is pure arrogance and to do this would also be a sin.

I am standing with the Reverend Dr. Jerry P. Kulah, Dean of the Gbarnga School of Theology, United Methodist University.
He is the Athanasius of modern Africa – Defender of the faith!

[Let us], Keep on being faithful to what you were taught and to what you believed. After all, you know who taught you these things. Since childhood, you have known the Holy Scriptures that are able to make you wise enough to have faith in Christ Jesus and be saved. Everything in the Scriptures is God’s Word. All of it is useful for teaching and helping people and for correcting them and showing them how to live. The Scriptures train God’s servants to do all kinds of good deeds.

    2 Timothy 3:14-17

In my own theological education I’ve been exposed to a good but of progressive Christian thought. One of the hallmarks of progressive theology is anti-colonialism, or the desire to move past western dominance in the world and hear from our global brothers and sisters in Christ.

So to my progressive Christian friends, a question:

What could be more colonizing than a minority of white American Methodists forcing their view of sexual ethics on the majority of global Methodist Christians?

I am grateful for Dr. Kulah’s stand and pray the rest of the UMC will listen.

  91. Comment by Richie on February 26, 2019 at 10:15 pm

The original plan was to let the local churches decide what they would, and would not be able to tolerate, based on where they were in their customs, beliefs and faith journeys. This was not about colonialism, but about keeping a diverse group of people united in the service of God across an expanding community of the faithful. There was no force involved here, only the freedom to serve the lost and the found.

OCP folks just don’t get it. We cannot be United in unbiblical teaching which refuses to inform an entire group of our members that they need to repent of a very destructive sinful practice.

Holding firmly to God’s Word and walking in obedience, love and grace are partly responsible for the explosive growth of the African UMC. God has blessed their ministry with power and growth. Here in the US? Not so much. People are leaving the UMC and going to churches where the word of God and the gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ is proclaimed. Thank you, pastor, for reminding us of that. Blessings for you and your ministry.

  97. Comment by Charles G on February 24, 2019 at 8:18 am

Praise God for our brother from Liberia. I left the UMC after decades in membership and near appointment to lead a church. The American UMC has crumbled. The Book of Discipline (I was told openly by many UMC leaders) was not followed. Then what is the point of having such a book? God bless the African Nun who stood up to the Catholic church too. Our African brothers and sisters don’t need to be enlightened. They have now become teachers of the Truth. I pray for the UMC but I wonder if God is putting out the flame on one of His lamp stands for a reason.

  100. Comment by Robert B on February 24, 2019 at 8:51 am

Dr. Kulah, thank you for your bold remarks. I feel there is hope in your message that Jesus is not for sale. We must love our brothers and sisters that have sexual preferences in contrast to biblical truth. However, God’s unconditional love is separate from His approval. May God put peace in all of our hearts, keep us strong in his word, and help us love each other.

  101. Comment by Bobbie Gosnell on February 24, 2019 at 8:56 am

My lesbian daughter came out at aged 11. She had insisted on dressing like a boy from age 3. There were no gay recruiters in her nursery. She was Baptized by her 4th month. And now the church you want calls her unfit. Shame on Africans who support such knee-jerk hate. Please tell what Jesus said on the subject.

  102. Comment by Kate on February 25, 2019 at 4:34 am

Dearest Bobbie Gosnell, God’s truth cannot be broken. I cannot imagine your pain but i would remember to pray that God will cause a transforming change in your heart, in your daughter’s life and your home. Jesus loves us all the same but requires TOTAL and UNCOMPROMISING obedience to His word even when it hurts! May you find peace in reconciling with God’s truth. Grace and love be multiplied to you.

  103. Comment by David on February 26, 2019 at 8:19 am

Bobbie, Jesus did address this subject in Matthew 19. He reaffirmed marriage as between one man and one woman. He loves your daughter, as He loves us all, but He does not love the sin that any of us would give in to; no matter what it is.

  104. Comment by RIchie on February 26, 2019 at 10:28 pm

Actually, Jesus is responding to a question by the Pharisees in Matthew 19. He addressed the question of divorce, not the question of sexuality. He quotes scripture back to the Pharisees and turns the table on them. To interpret this as some way of defining marriage by Jesus is not accurate.

  105. Comment by Vern Smith on February 28, 2019 at 2:14 pm

When the Paul and the other Old and New Testament writers penned scripture through the Holy Spirit, it was representative of the TRINITY, which would include Jesus.
All Scripture is God-breathed, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfected, thoroughly furnished to every good work. 2Timothy 3:16-17
For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on the earth: the Spirit, and the water, and the blood; and the three are into the one.
    1John 5:7-8

In the story of the woman who committed adultery about to be stoned, Jesus told them whoever is without sin throw the first stone. No one could throw a stone at her. Then Jesus told her he didn’t condemn her but simply said, “Go and sin no more.” That’s what Jesus tells all of us today. He is forgiving, compassionate, merciful and doesn’t condemn us but he does tell us to stop sinning, because sin damages us! I didn’t read the Pastor or anyone in these comments state that homosexuals as “unfit” or unacceptable congregants in the church.

I didn’t read anything in what this Pastor said that stated homosexuals are “unfit” or that they should be hated or rejected by the church. God hates sin but He loves the sinner. “Jesus came not into the world to condemn the world but that the world through Him might be saved.” He came to set us free from bondage to our sin natures.

This bishop has just read aloud the label on the American UM Church jar and the ingredients are quite telling.
“Lord, forgive for what we have done and what we have left undone. Apart from your grace, there is no health in us.”

Thank you Bishop for standing on God’s Word, which changes lives into Christ’s image when it is obeyed. For all those who have been- or are- delivered by the Power of His Word and Presence from the lies of the homosexual persuasion, I personally thank you. Transformation is what Christians are about, and it comes by Conviction and Repentance, as you make clear to the Conference.

  118. Comment by Carole on February 24, 2019 at 7:26 pm

I agree with the Dr. Kulah. His remarks are the best I’ve heard. I have been taught all my life that if God said it,I’m to believe it,and not question it.Scripture is very clear on the subject of homosexuality. I don’t question Gods reasons.

  122. Comment by Shannon Gibbs on February 24, 2019 at 3:16 pm

I am so thankful (and envious really) for the clarity of leadership and passion for biblical truth that our African brothers and sisters display. If we can’t muster up this type of outspoken leadership among the bishops and pastors in the US, we would do well to figure out some exit strategy for the Bible adhering churches in the US that would put our churches under the African bishops. It’s very interesting how clear the Bible actually is when people’s pensions or personal idols of sexuality or likability in society are taken out of the conversation. Praying diligently for this week to settle the issue once and for all, and if that means a split, then praise God for it! Time to move on. …..2 Cor 6:14-18.

Sad to read these words and the comments above. God created ALL of us in His image – black, white, straight, gay, male, female. Praying for hearts to be softened so that people like my son who was born gay have the same rights in church as I do. And, contrary to what at least one person posted, conversion therapy à la Mike Pence should be outlawed. You can’t “pray the gay” out of someone. Our son is amazing! Proud momma!

  137. Comment by George K. Lavien on February 25, 2019 at 7:20 am

This is definitely not merely about taking sides but rather stating with unbending convictions that biblical truth is constant, consistent and unchangeable. In his entire address, Dr. Kulah makes it clear that it is not a situation or a case of hating or treating with disdain our homosexual/lesbian brethren. No! We are called to love them (another biblical truth) and love them we will and we must, but loving them does not necessarily call for the negation and the changing of what has always been and will always be the scriptural teaching and understanding on and about the subject matter. Again, thank you once more Dr. Kulah for a bold stand and I can assure you that you did not just speak on behalf of the African Church but on behalf of all true Bible believers the world over.

Funny how the Progressives who infiltrated the old churches of the rich societies thought they could buy the souls of the relatively poor African Christians with filthy lucre. Funny sad and creepy, not funny ha ha. This made me think of Revelation 3:
17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

  141. Comment by Carolyn Myers on February 25, 2019 at 10:08 am

    Dr. Kilah,
I agree with all you said. Thank you for saying what many of us could not say. My family supports the traditional plan. If another is voted in we will leave the Methodist church. We agree as you that we love all people but we do not allow just anyone as Shepard’s of our flock. As you can see that is why we are in this predicament. If we follow the Bible teachings and the teachings of John Wesley we should be ok but allowing the blasphemy and abomination in the church as we have it seems that the scriptures tell us we will fall. Praying for divine intervention in these meetings.

These responses are nice and all, but where are the congregates willing to take action and remove the blasphemers destroying your church. The people promoting this degeneracy are cat ladies and noodle armed homosexuals. Where are the men willing to take charge?

  144. Comment by Helen Talley on February 25, 2019 at 11:17 am

Dr. Jerry P. Kulah has reached many hearts through this letter that has found it’s way to Facebook. The article is well said and much needed.

Our little country church wants to follow the same path. We believe in the Christian teachings and the sacred scriptures and the Bible in which are placed for our consumption, to feed our minds and hearts. We feel the One Church Plan is wrong and so we will follow the Modified Traditional Plan and share it with anyone who wants to know. Our little church struggles to do the things that are requested of us outside our own area. But when push comes to shove, we are all willing to help others in the same position.

The floods that the Lord has once again sent into our area is a major task for us today. We all will pull together and work to hold back the water and then help to rebuild their homes. That’s how we share with others, no matter what faith or color they might be.

We are a small area. Our church was one of many that were in a circuit many years ago. They were churches that were filled every Sunday and had believers of the Christian teachings. We don’t “ condone the practice of homosexuality and considers [it] incompatible with Christian teaching.” But that does not mean we don’t love them. We pray for them and help them to see the light. Jesus is there for all of us. We can only pray that the One Plan church does not succeed.

We draw close to the One who holds us in His hand. WE all need HIS awesome presence 24/7 in our lives. THE POWER OF THE LORD’S PRESENCE
    David Wilkerson (1931-2011)
    February 25, 2019
Scripture provides endless examples of how the Lord’s presence empowers his people to live for him. One of the most powerful examples is the life of Moses.

Without God’s presence, Moses knew it was useless for him to attempt anything. When he spoke face to face with the Lord, he stated boldly, “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here” (Exodus 33:15, NKJV). He was saying, “Lord, if you’re not with us, we’re not going to make it. We won’t take a single step unless we’re assured of your presence.”

Moses knew it was God’s presence among them that set them apart from all other nations. Today, the same is true of God’s people. The only thing that sets us apart from nonbelievers is God’s presence “with us,” leading us, guiding us, working his will in and through us.”
Prayers for a people called Methodist!!

What Biblical truth and courage from this man of God! Oh, that other pastors in America would stand strong and bold in love on the Word! Yes, we all sin, but when we commit our lives to Christ, we strive to follow His teachings and Truth. He forgave the woman at the well, but told her to “Go and sin no more!” She was not to continue in her sinful ways. I would also hope that pastors globally would rise up in defense of the unborn. It is up to churches to lead the way.

Thank God for men like this.
It is clear to me that in our country, and confirmed by the number of our bishops who are for the One Church Plan, that we (USA Methodist) unlike this man, can and are willing to be bought..at least the majority of bishops are. I think we need to “drain that swamp” too.

Someone once told me that a religion who believes in everything really believes in nothing. Our ancestors worked hard for Methodism for us to destroy what they built.

If you love God , you will follow his rules and laws. We are to lead our lives as Jesus would. Thanks African brothers. Thanks Dr. Kulah.

Such a powerful affirmation from my Liberian Brother in Christ is similar to those offered by Mekane Yesu and The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania shared with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America ten years ago. Of course, their admonitions fell on mostly deaf ears and the decline of this former mainline Lutheran group has accelerated tremendously since.
WIll the United Methodists refuse to hear this Christian leader’s counsel? Please…let these Believers graciously leave, if not.

  157. Comment by Gift on February 26, 2019 at 2:53 am

I am proud of this stance. Don’t be intimidated by material status of other church members before God you are the same. On matters of value we have the Scripture for guidance ; if one makes another source their source so be it but not in the name of the Church of Jesus Christ. We attract people to church by standing for godly values not by stooping low/compromising our values. I liked the statement – we better be divided by the truth not to be united by lies – a statement by a Liberian lay delegate.

  158. Comment by Gift Kany on February 26, 2019 at 3:00 am

The great evangelist Billy Graham was once accussed of preaching a backward theology which would take the church a century backwards. he responded what a compliment I desire to take the church to that of 2000 years ago which is the early church. technology, buildings, print media might change but the teachings and principles of the church must not be changed. In the Book of Discipline some lines must never change as much as verses from the Bible will not change. This is consistent with having the Scriptures as the superior source of teachings and church doctrine.

As a pastor of a sister denomination, Wesleyan, I rejoice in and stand with Dr. Kulah’s address. The Lord will yet have a witness in these days.

  160. Comment by Bruce French on February 26, 2019 at 10:17 am

    Spot on, Dr. Kulah!
Can I hear a big Amen from some US bishops?

  161. Comment by Pamela Walker on February 26, 2019 at 11:40 am

I agree 100% and praise God for Dr. Kulah who has stated very clear and simple what we as children of God have been instructed to do.

  162. Comment by Olusola on February 26, 2019 at 12:10 pm

Thank you for the word of truth Dr. Kulah. This is another call for leaders to stand firm for truth as they lead the generation that is loosing focus of dignity and most importantly God’s plan for human race. Not even lower animals deviate to same sex relationship.

  163. Comment by Diana Binford on February 26, 2019 at 12:39 pm

Praise the Lord for you, Dr. Jerry P. Kehul! We are with you all the way. I didn’t think that I would see the day that someone from a foreign country would have to tell the U.S. UMC about the importance of following Jesus and His teachings. Thank you for your boldness. And yes, we are still on our knees about these issues. May God bless you richly!

  164. Comment by Dr. Glenn E. Casteel on February 26, 2019 at 1:27 pm

I wish our pastors and churches had the same spirit and hunger for the Truth that this Pastor speaks of. It seems we still haven not learned our lesson from Adam and Eve and the tree in the garden. We still want to know as much as God and have our own way. Thank you and Bless you Dr. Kulah!

  165. Comment by Pat on February 26, 2019 at 4:13 pm

Praise God for you Dr Kulah! Your words should be heard by everyone in MUC! So many are so afraid to stand up for God’s word because they either don’t have the courage or Satan has blocked their ears. We are all born sinners and make the choice to accept Jesus Christ as our redeemer when we repent of our sins! The Bible is clear on sin, if you are “born gay” it is no different than being born with any sin. We as Christians should treat the unsaved with love and kindness, praying that they will repent and turn to God! They are not the ones who should be given positions contrary to God’s word!
Thank you to the pastors and congregations who have already made the choice to stand for God and not what the so called leaders of the conference who are trying to please everyone, Not God’s Words!

  166. Comment by Atty. Ambrose Jah on February 26, 2019 at 4:53 pm

Thanks Bishop. We are with you

  167. Comment by Nancy Jacobs on February 26, 2019 at 5:29 pm

Thank you for standing firmly in God and His Word! I am honored to continue in the race set out before us with you. We are not to be of this world, but in it as a peculiar people. If we are no different than the world, what do we have that will light the way to Jesus? We are here so briefly that we must choose to take every opportunity to stand firmly rooted in God’s Word, loving others, so someday they may join us in Heaven for it is not His will that any should perish.

Methodists from west sent thousands of missionaries in the 19th and 20th century to Africa to save souls and now the children of those welcomed into the family of God have reminded us of scriptural truth.

  171. Comment by James Phillips on February 27, 2019 at 8:29 am

Amen, Brother! Thank you so much for being rooted in scripture and faithful to God’s word while still expressing the love and Grace of Jesus Christ. I am a Baptist pastor in America and truly appreciate your perspective. There is much the American Christians can learn from your wise comments. Thanks for working to keep United Methodist united!

As someone of Nigerian heritage who is converting to Judaism, but no less interested in this topic, thank G-d for these men. The Law of Moses is crystal clear on this topic and will not be changed. By all means, stand against the violent treatment of those with homosexual experiences. However, this does not entail an acceptance of sins that G-d has expressly forbidden in Scripture.

  173. Comment by Judy Mc on February 27, 2019 at 11:46 am

Praise God for our brother’s strong conviction in the necessity of God’s Word as our rule of faith and practice!

Thank you for listening to Holy Spirit and speaking only that which God would say. Beautiful. The Lord has put this Scripture on my heart – 1 Kings 22:14 But Micaiah replied, “As surely as the Lord lives, I will say only what the Lord tells me to say.”

I praise God for you & for your clear Biblical stance! Living in America I see the bombardment of the Churches from liberals who want to change the us to suit their progressive viewpoints. They no longer honor God’s holy word as all inclusive TRUTH. Their morals are so low they can not see the lies that rule them. I believe we are facing End TImes standards that are attacking us viciously! But God is sufficient to our needs; He will hold us up above the evil grasping if we keep focused on Him. I pray you continue to stand firm, fellow Christian, we need your message here in America!!

Thank God for our Africian brothers and sisters in Christ and thank you for your votes at the General Conference that we remain steadfast in the Word of God rather than the evil desires and imaginations of the flesh.

Well said, and well thought through. The word of God is our stand and guide. As we are walking this faith journey we need this kind of reminders. One day we will be asked and we are going to answer. Thank you for being the defenders of faith. Let us, as Methodist continue the business of transforming this world with the true gospel of Jesus Christ. Open doors, Open minds, and Open hearts means all sinners are wanted and they must repent, and not turn sin into a way of life.

  181. Comment by Bob Hunter on February 28, 2019 at 11:41 am

I was in a private meeting between the leaders of the Episcopal Church and the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Henry Orombe during the height of the fight. The leaders made clear money support for the Africans was at stake. Henry told them first that tha Africans were overwhelmingly grateful that the Church had brought them the Bible. “We read it and we believed it. We follow it and we won’t stop doing so. As for money, the Gospel is not for sale. “
Thank God for the Africans in all denominations!

  182. Comment by Adams Mendeh Bosse on February 28, 2019 at 12:41 pm

Dr kulah articulated the minds of Africans, yes money is important but what about morals ethics of the BIBLE? We can’t sale our faith for materialism.

  183. Comment by George Miller on February 28, 2019 at 8:16 pm

Wow! What an excellent response! I am so encouraged with the tenacity of our international leaders. What a kind but powerful statement and diligently holding to both the Biblical teaching as well as church traditions.

  184. Comment by Julius Clark on February 28, 2019 at 9:23 pm

Dr. Kuala has boldly stated what many American UMC members believe, but refuse to state publicly, in the name of “tollorance”. Which is a real lame excuse for ignoring the truth. Accepting sin is not tollorant, it’s disobedience to God in it’s purest form. There is room at the cross of Christ for those who are in all forms of sexual immorality. But the point must be remembered that it is the Church Universal, which is grounded in the teachings of the Bible, that will save us from the power of sin and death. In short, this is about the United Methodist Church submitting to the word of God, not the emotional whims of man. We all will submit; who will we submit to is the true question.

I would rather submit and stand with Jesus and Dr. Kulah. The word of God is true. I will accept no substitute.

  185. Comment by Matt Jones on February 28, 2019 at 11:02 pm

I am glad to hear that the African Methodists do not need any financial support from US Methodists. I will no longer advocate for financial support for African Methodists.

  186. Comment by Paul Jordan on March 2, 2019 at 2:59 am

Mr jones, Do you really believe that your lack of financial support will somehow derail the spreading of the true Gospel? The church has seen its people imprisoned, beaten, beheaded, crucified, fed to lions, etc…and yet the gospel remains… The God of all creation is in charge of the African Methodists finances, so however you choose to allocate funds will not impact Gods work…Its funny we often think God needs us to accomplish His work. He just extends us opportunities to be a part of His glorious plan, but He doesnt need your allocated funds.. The only one you will he hurting is yourself…you will lose the wonderful gift of coming alongside brothers and sisters who are winning souls to the true message of the gospel…i pray you wont make that mistake! May you have a blessed day my friend!

What a beautifully written and inspired message. It occurs to me that these vibrant Christians will soon be sending there missionaries to USA which desperately is in need of a revival and renewal of biblical faith.

Speaking the truth in love, it is right. How I rejoice at this. True freedom in the strong name of Jesus.

  191. Comment by Alice C. Linsley on March 1, 2019 at 4:01 pm

Having lived through the Episcopal Church wars, I can assure you that there will be other attempts to buy global delegates. Next, the activists will take their fight to the courts. When that fails, they will publish false statements intended to damage the reputation of the conservative leaders. It is deja vu – the Episcopal Church war all over again.

Not even United Methodist and been praying for the church’s meeting this week from The Great State of Kentucky in the US. Thank God for the non western church still rooted in truth and not feelings. As a person that struggles with SSA, it wonderful to hear the affirmation of what we believe and know God’s intentions are toward us. And love the little bit of biting sass peppered in from Dr. Kulah, but spoken in love ‘cause worth’s spoken in truth are love.

I Thank God that our African brother and sister delegates stood firm on God’s word and voted for the Traditional Plan . If it had been left up to our US delegates I think they would voted for the One Church Plan. Thank you Dr. Jerry Kulah for the speech it is great and very true. Forrest King

Truly, it’s time for these people to grow up and stop spouting such nicely religious-sounding twaddle. Time for them to consider the hurt they are causing and to be willing to actually study what the scriptures say instead of assuming. Very disappointing virtue signalling effort.

  202. Comment by John Smith on March 5, 2019 at 7:27 am

This should be sent to every Methodist:

we Africans are not children in need of western enlightenment when it comes to the church’s sexual ethics. We do not need to hear a progressive U.S. bishop lecture us about our need to “grow up.”

Thank you for your faithfulness to the inspired Word if God. One needs only to spend time studying it to recognize the Truth it reveals. May there be an awakening of the Holy Spirit’s power that will bring blessings to the church worldwide?? and to those who need the message of salvation through our dear savior, Jesus Christ.

Praise the Lord! The Church must be subject to Scripture and Scripture is very clear of sin and that includes lifestyles that are in contradiction to Scripture. So we love all and pray that the transforming power that we ALL need will transform our minds and lifestyles so that we can truly experience the freedom that JESUS promises to those who make Him Saviour and Lord.

  208. Comment by Eunice Ann Carr on March 30, 2019 at 2:09 am

This so blessed me and encouraged me, to read and hear, of faithfulness to our Lord Jesus Christ and His Word makes me so happy. So many have fallen by the wayside and fallen away from His Truth, and still speaking as if they are Christians when they are nothing but apostates. Stay strong AUM.

  209. Comment by Tony Sendaydiego on April 13, 2019 at 8:00 pm

Praise be to God for men such as Mr. Jerry Kulah, who is not afraid to aver his beliefs that are deeply rooted in Scripture, and also declaring that “the vast majority of African United Methodists will never, ever trade Jesus and the truth of the Bible for money.! I pray God shine his divine protection and goodness to this man. May his tribe increase!

  210. Comment by Linda on July 4, 2019 at 3:08 pm

Thank you for upholding the Truth. Regardless of those that build their churches on shifting sand, God will always be Sovereign! Just know that there are still Churches in the USA that will not budge from the Truth.

UM Missionaries went to Africa in 1792 to spread the Gospel. Soon more than half of all United Methodist will live in Africa. It is past time for them to become autonomous, self-sufficient, self-sustaining and able to write their on Book of Discipline in a manner appropriate for their social and cultural development. May God bless them as they depart the denomination in 2020.

  212. Comment by Jim Tripodi on January 17, 2020 at 12:00 am

I admire the truth and clarity with which Dr. Jerry P. Kulah writes. Simply put, what is at stake is the truth of the scripture and the gospel. Those focusing on God’s love are making a God that is only half God. Yes, God is a God of mercy and grace, but also a God of justice and truth. Jealous of His Holy name. Keeping His bride, the church pure, to reflect His image to a needy world. Keep on dear brothers holding to the truth. Jim Tripodi former UMC member in North Carolina.

  213. Comment by Susan Bacsick on June 28, 2020 at 3:22 pm

So how do we get the churches in the United States to understand this?? I’m so disappointed in my church because of it failing to teach responsibility for actions and consequences of those actions. The church has too much flash, production, and amusement and at the moment it all stops, so does the attendance. Our church leaders continue “the show”—a frantic effort to keep their sheep from leaving by layering on more and more creative, yet extra-biblical ideas. How many Christians today are so biblically illiterate because they are not taught from the bible.
