Top Evangelical Leaders Back New Nashville Statement on Sexuality

on August 29, 2017

More than 150 Evangelical leaders representing churches, seminaries, and ministries have signed a statement affirming Biblical themes of marriage, gender, and sexual morality. The Council for Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (CBMW) released the coalition statement, called the Nashville Statement, on Tuesday after gathering key Evangelical leaders for a meeting hosted by the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission last week in Nashville, Tennessee.

CBMW President Denny Burk says the statement’s goal is to “shine a light into the darkness” and offer clarity in an age where “confusion reigns over some of the most basic questions of our humanity.”

While Burk is responsible for spearheading the statement, CBMW told the Institute on Religion and Democracy that key Evangelical leaders such as John Piper, Albert Mohler, and Daniel Akin advised the proclamation’s spiritual architecture.

“The Nashville Statement is a Christian manifesto concerning issues of human sexuality,” said Piper, a co-founder of CBMW. “It affirms with joy that no form of sexual sin is beyond forgiveness and healing.”

The statement’s preamble reads, in part:

Evangelical Christians at the dawn of the twenty-first century find themselves living in a period of historic transition. As Western culture has become increasingly post-Christian, it has embarked upon a massive revision of what it means to be a human being. By and large the spirit of our age no longer discerns or delights in the beauty of God’s design for human life. Many deny that God created human beings for his glory, and that his good purposes for us include our personal and physical design as male and female. It is common to think that human identity as male and female is not part of God’s beautiful plan, but is, rather, an expression of an individual’s autonomous preferences. The pathway to full and lasting joy through God’s good design for his creatures is thus replaced by the path of shortsighted alternatives that, sooner or later, ruin human life and dishonor God.

Top Evangelicals leaders within the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation’s largest Protestant denomination representing over 47,000 Baptist churches across the United States, signed the statement.

Other major signatories include Anglican pastor and apologist Sam Alberry, popular author and pastor Francis Chan, Charisma Media’s founder and CEO, Steven Strang, and Asbury Theologian’s Visiting Distinguished Professor of Old Testament John N. Oswalt.

Not sure why I would want to add my signature to this heretical, anti-Christian document.

To my knowlege, God’s Word has not changed regarding homosexuality. IT IS STILL A SIN!!! Coming into agreement with world opinions and views is a dangerous thing. Agree with the inspired Word of God. Love others, but hate sin.

If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord’s commandment. But if anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized.

Didn’t see where any Methodists were involved in this effort.

    Too bad.

    Not surprised!

Didn’t say if any Methodist (UMC) were involved in this effort.

    Probably not…..sad!

    Not surprised!

Disappointed to see the absence of Biblical references or sources for any of the positions taken.

If you look up any of the signers, you will see they’ve used biblical references on this subject in published sermons, articles and in books. They could say, as the Founders of this country did, these are “self-evident truths” to anyone familiar with the Bible.

No episcopalian’s have signed this statement and will not I am told. But ACNA archbishop Foley Beach has signed it

I can believe the Methodist are not involved in this, because the
Evangelical part of the Union (UMC) has been forgotten as the church has moved to the left!

I think that unless our country will select God and His ways to rule our nation we are doomed to failure and chaos. God is our creater

Why exactly are so many self-professed “Christians” opposed to the Nashville Declaration? It is based purely on biblical truth, as given to us by Almighty God and our Lord Jesus Christ. To stand against the Declaration is to stand against Them, and the Bible, God’s Holy Word. Has the Declaration been read by those opposing it? “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves.”-2nd Corinthians 13:5 KJV.

Thank our Precious Lord Jesus for this! And I am so Praising our Lord that they also included His Forgiveness, Grace & Love for lives who come to know Christ Jesus as their Personal Savior, Who”s Grace Is Sufficient and Who Forgives Our Sinful Nature And Can Make Us Whole & Cleanse Us Daily!

A courageous declaration. The abiding forgiveness is the strong point,, surely based on John 8:1-12. The denials strike me as based on Matthew 10:33-35Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. 35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
And the example that also comes to mind is the strength of conviction and non-action of Henri Nouwen.

So sorry that no Episcopalians have signed this statement, and won’t, according to David Virtue’s comment. I am an Episcopalian and I support the document and know many other Epicopalians who support its truths.

No Episcopalians have signed this document, and will not, according to David Virtue, but I am an Episcopalian and I support the truths in the statement and know many other Episcopalians who hold the same views. I am grieved that
much of our Church’s leadership does not.

The reality of the gay community is the fact that they don’t practice sexuality at all. But abuse the creative ability God gave mankind, to populate the world He created. Mankind was to be the highest creation willingly communing with their creator. The first two failed and set us on a hard and serious journey. Fulfilling lust is not sexuality, it is the abuse of it, the reason for the flood and the death of the whole population including animals, bar a few saved by the 8 humans God saved from His wrath. Why even think of gay life ? The end is eternal punishment with no escape possible. It is the sign of Jesus returning in judgement. Didn’t He say, as in the days of Noah, so shall it be at the coming of the son of man. The deluded go to a fiery eternity. 1 Timothy 1:8-14. Colossians 3:4-10. Mark 9:43-50. Being Gay, is no place to be with the end described for sinners.

Who are you to judge? You believe in fairy tales. Wake up!

  24. Comment by A. Theisens, Holland on January 6, 2019 at 1:58 pm

The declaration was signed by Evangelicals, of whom 80%. voted for Trump. A man who stands for everything that is bad and ugly in the U.S. People who see him as the ressurection of king Darius cannot bee seen as people who discern spirits. It can hardly be a surprise that Southern Baptists are a part of this. These people still smell of the black churches they set on fire.
