Lefty UCC: Repent of Killing Plants (But Abortion is Still Okay)

on August 2, 2017

All Christians can and should support stewardship of creation. But opposition to killing plant life while failing to defend life in the womb defies logic. Unfortunately, the progressive Mainline Protestant denomination United Church of Christ (UCC) crossed into this insidious territory with their “Daily Devotional” on August 2.

New York City UCC Pastor Kaji Douša wrote a devotional entitled “Killers Like Me,” which the denomination posted on its website and emailed to subscribers. In the devotional, Pastor Douša lamented her inability to “care for them [plants] reliably.” She warned that plants “really should tremble in my presence” given her pattern of inadvertently killing them through inattention. She offered the following prayer at the end of her post:

Forgive us, O God, for our crisping of your planet. As our world turns, may we turn towards more faithful care of all that you’ve entrusted to us. Amen.

While her statement that “I hate killing things” echoes Christian morality, Pastor Douša’s choice to focus on preserving plant life rings hollow when the denomination in which she ministers supports allowing women to abort their babies. The UCC embraces the progressive agenda on “reproductive justice issues,” and openly admits on its website:

After the Supreme Court decision in 1972, Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in the U.S., the UCC has joined with other faith groups to protect women’s equal and fair access to abortion and family planning which have been under attack consistently.

This ideological idiosyncrasy harkens back to a well-known Bible story. The Old Testament prophet Jonah similarly bemoaned the death of a plant while remaining tone-deaf to the fate of tens of thousands of human lives. This earned Jonah a sharp reprimand from God:

And the LORD said, “You pity the plant, for which you did not labor, nor did you make it grow, which came into being in a night and perished in a night. And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much cattle?” (Jonah 4:10-11, ESV)

The UCC would do well to heed this rebuke from God in Scripture. In the hierarchy of Heaven, human lives should come first and creation care second.

The UCC is one of the saddest stories in American church history. Their forebearers were among the first to settle here, the loudest in support for independence, and the most forceful in the abolition movement. That history is now stored inside the institutional walls of the UCC and UUA. We could power country from all the old Congregationalists spinning in their graves.

Blindness to the truth of The Word, pray God will reveal all of His Word to this group.

A woman’s right to choose to keep or abort HER OWN fetus is a Constitutional right, and each woman deserves the right to make that choice herself, without the Church (or a group of Male politicians) interceding.

If you’re not a woman, I really don’t think it’s any business of any man to decide.

No one contests the legal right but rather the moral right. The church has little standing to judge the first but is called to witness to the latter. As to the concept of “If you aren’t a ____ you have no right to an opinion on _________.” is so foolish as to need no answer except to view it as an admission of any real foundation to contest the point.

I agree with LukeinNH. As a former member of the UCC and a lifelong member of a Congregational church founded in my community in 1842, I guarantee those founders are spinning in their graves along with my parents, after the UCC lost its way publicly in 2005 with anti Israel, pro abortion, pro sodomy marriage, any thing goes sex Ed (our whole lives – written by Planned Parenthood). This doesn’t surprise me. I am offended that she is wearing a Roman collar. After searching for the truth I found it in the Catholic Church in 2010. They have troubles now, but Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit is in charge as opposed to radical progressives with an anti Christian agenda.
