Panel to Discuss Moral Ramifications of US Debt Crisis

on January 7, 2014

Next Thursday, January 16 at 12:00 PM, Institute on  Religion and Democracy’s President Mark Tooley will take part in a discussion of the U.S. federal government’s fiscal woes and the ethical dimensions of addressing our debt. The event, entitled “The Moral Case for Addressing America’s Fiscal Crises” will be held by The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB), a “bipartisan, non-profit organization committed to educating the public about issues that have significant fiscal impact.” The discussion will take place at CRFB’s headquarters at 1899 L Street, Suite 400, in Washington, D.C.

In October 2013, the U.S. national debt surpassed $17 trillion for the first time in our nation’s history. As Washington politicians continue to debate methods of addressing this debt, the panel will discuss the thorny moral questions that far too often go unaddressed. From the CRFB’s press release, announcing the event:

Congress and the White House grapple with difficult choices in trying to address our national fiscal woes.  America’s federal debt approaches $12 trillion and is scheduled to top $19 trillion by 2023.  Unless serious action is taken, the growing federal debt threatens to crowd out capital, raise interest rates, and squeeze government’s ability to respond to needs, fund programs, defend the country, and meet its obligations.

But what about the moral dimensions to America’s fiscal situation?  Are there ethical considerations involved with America’s budget woes?  What about the impact of federal, state and local fiscal challenges on the poor and most vulnerable citizens?  Are there generational equity issues?  Are there faith based concerns about passing a large amount of debt to future generations?  Or about the appropriate role of the federal government?   Join the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget for a discussion of the morality, ethics, and economics of America’s fiscal challenges.

In addition to Mr. Tooley, panelists will include CRFB’s own Marc Goldwein,  the American Enterprise Institute’s Josh Good, Jacksonville-based pastor Rev. John Allen Newman, and Dr. Jay Richards, Distinguished Fellow at the Institute for Faith, Work and Economics. The panel will be moderated by Rev. Dr. David Gray, a Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation.

Lunch will be provided. Those interested in attending should RSVP to Peggy Cusack at Cusack@fixthedebt.org.
