Hail! Comrade Russell Brand

on October 25, 2013

The early days of the IRD were filled by confronting the Religious Left’s fascination and support for the Soviet Union. The National Council of Churches and other groups seemed certain that the Socialist utopia was just around the corner and yet were silent on the systematic and brutal attacks of Christians. So it is rather disconcerting when the social media world of the Religious Left is alight with praises for Russell Brand’s interview on BBC with Jeremy Paxman.

Hailed as a game changer, revolutionary, brilliant, and stunning these rambling ideas offered by Brand reflect a man who read too much Marx, but not enough history.  The “Socialist Egalitarian system based on massive redistribution of wealth, heavy taxation of corporations, and massive responsibilities for energy companies” is the very system that led to the death of 100 million people in the last century.  Sadly, Jeremy  Paxman seemed to rest his entire interview on the issue of Russell’s voting habits rather than the fact that a man worth an estimated $15 million is demanding massive wealth redistribution.  He could have asked Russell how much he would like a 75% tax on his wealth and if he likes standing in line for bread.

Oops, I got the wrong interview.  Here’s Russell Brand:

4:30 into the video Russell offers he political vision. “I want a Socialist egalitarian system based on massive redistribution of wealth, heavy taxation on corporations and massive responsibilities for energy companies and any company exploiting the environment. I think they should be taxed… The concept of profit should be hugely reduced. David Cameron says profit is not a dirty word. I say profit is a filthy word because where ever there is profit there is deficit and this [current] system doesn’t currently address those ideas.”

yet he makes handsome profits for his movies??? I hope Mr. Brand (who I have never seen in a film) has seen fit to redistribute his wealth to others and live a life of poverty like the downtrodden proletariat always do.

It’s hilarious to see a millionaire like Russel Brand advocating for socialism. In a real socialist revolution he’d be one of the first people “to the wall” as Che Guvera said.
